小时候，乡愁是一枚小小的邮票 When I was young, homesick is a little stamp
我在这头， 母亲在那头I am here ,momther was there

长大后，乡愁是一枚小小的船票When I grow up, homesick is a little ship ticket
我在这头，新娘在那头I am here , my wife was there

后来啊，乡愁是一方小小的坟墓Afterwards, homesick is a little grave
我在外头，母亲在里头I am on the outside, momther was in there

而现在，乡愁是一弯浅浅的海峡But right now, homesick is a straight
我在这头，大陆在那头I am here , my homeland was there

1940年抗戰時期余光中入四川江北悅來場教會學校南京青年會中學，借用民宅當校舍，而其父余超英的工作單位及父母的住所，就在十里外的朱氏祠堂裏。余光中寄宿在學校，每隔一兩周才回家一次，所以〈鄉愁〉的開頭就從此時與母親通信的郵票為象徵，代表著幼時思念母親的鄉愁。小時候上寄宿學校，要與媽媽通信﹔婚後赴美讀書，坐輪船返台﹔後來母親去世，永失母愛。詩的前三句思念的都是女性，到最後一句我想到祖國大陸這樣“大母親”，於是意境和思路便豁然開朗，就有了“鄉愁是一灣淺淺的海峽”一句。」

When the post was a young boy and going to highschool,he can't go home everyday.Separated by only go home once a week. So this poem's start is about the stamp,because he always use a stamp to contact his mom.  And when the post get married,he have to leave his wife and go to America to study,so the poem's cecond part is about the ship ticket. Afterwords,post'momther was died ,he lost his mom forever,so he's poem the thith part is writeing about the grave.This poem the first three part is all about the woman, but the last partis about the homeland. Why? Because the post think the homeland just like his mom.China is everybody's momther.
